**Ascariasis #
** A neglected tropical disease caused by the roundworm *Ascaris lumbricoides*, which infects the small intestine. It is transmitted through the fecal-oral route, often through contaminated food or water. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea, and in severe cases, intestinal obstruction.
**Chagas Disease #
** Also known as American trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan *Trypanosoma cruzi*. It is transmitted to humans through the feces of triatomine bugs, also known as "kissing bugs." The disease can cause symptoms such as fever, swelling, and skin lesions, and if left untreated, can lead to serious heart and digestive complications.
**Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) #
** A medication used to treat lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis. DEC works by killing the microfilariae, or larval stage, of the parasitic worms that cause these diseases.
**Dracunculiasis #
** Also known as Guinea worm disease, dracunculiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the parasitic worm *Dracunculus medinensis*. It is transmitted through the consumption of contaminated water, and symptoms include painful blisters and ulcers as the worm emerges from the skin.
**Eisner Award #
** An award given by the American Public Health Association (APHA) to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of neglected tropical diseases.
**Elimination #
** The interruption of the transmission of a neglected tropical disease in a defined geographical area, with the goal of reducing the incidence of the disease to zero.
**Elimination 8 (E8) #
** A coalition of eight African countries (Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Benin, and Togo) working together to eliminate neglected tropical diseases in the region.
**Filariasis, Bancroftian #
** A neglected tropical disease caused by the parasitic worm *Wuchereria bancrofti*. It is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes and can cause symptoms such as lymphadenopathy, elephantiasis, and blindness.
**Filariasis, Lymphatic #
** A neglected tropical disease caused by the parasitic worms *Wuchereria bancrofti*, *Brugia malayi*, and *Brugia timori*. It is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes and can cause symptoms such as lymphadenopathy, elephantiasis, and blindness.
**Global Burden of Disease (GBD) #
** A comprehensive study of the global burden of diseases, injuries, and risk factors, including neglected tropical diseases.
**Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases Control (GNNTDC) #
** An international organization that aims to control and eliminate neglected tropical diseases through collaboration, research, and advocacy.
**Helminthiasis #
** A general term for infections caused by parasitic worms, including neglected tropical diseases such as ascariasis, dracunculiasis, and lymphatic filariasis.
**Hookworm Infection #
** A neglected tropical disease caused by the parasitic worms *Necator americanus* and *Ancylostoma duodenale*. It is transmitted through the skin, often through contaminated soil, and can cause symptoms such as anemia, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
**Ivermectin #
** A medication used to treat a variety of neglected tropical diseases, including onchocerciasis, strongyloidiasis, and scabies. Ivermectin works by paralyzing or killing the parasitic worms that cause these diseases.
**Kato #
Katz Technique:** A microscopy-based diagnostic method used to detect and quantify the eggs of parasitic worms, such as those that cause schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis.
**Leprosy #
** A neglected tropical disease caused by the bacterium *Mycobacterium leprae*. It is characterized by skin lesions, nerve damage, and deformities, and is transmitted through prolonged close contact with an infected person.
**Loiasis #
** A neglected tropical disease caused by the parasitic worm *Loa loa*. It is transmitted through the bite of infected deer flies and can cause symptoms such as itchy skin, swelling, and Calabar swellings.
**Mass Drug Administration (MDA) #
** The large-scale distribution of medication to entire communities, often as a strategy for controlling or eliminating neglected tropical diseases.
**Mectizan #
** The brand name for ivermectin, a medication used to treat a variety of neglected tropical diseases, including onchocerciasis, strongyloidiasis, and scabies.
**Microfilaria #
** The larval stage of parasitic worms that cause diseases such as lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis.
**Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) #
** A group of infectious diseases that primarily affect populations living in poverty in tropical and subtropical regions. NTDs include diseases such as ascariasis, dracunculiasis, leprosy, and onchocerciasis.
**Onchocerciasis #
** Also known as river blindness, onchocerciasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the parasitic worm *Onchocerca volvulus*. It is transmitted through the bite of infected blackflies and can cause symptoms such as itchy skin, vision loss, and blindness.
**Parasitic Worm #
** A type of organism that lives on or inside another organism, known as the host, and derives its nutrients from the host. Parasitic worms can cause a variety of neglected tropical diseases, including ascariasis, dracunculiasis, and lymphatic filariasis.
**Prevalence #
** The proportion of a population that is affected by a particular disease or condition at a given point in time.
**Schistosomiasis #
** A neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic worms of the genus *Schistosoma*. It is transmitted through contact with contaminated water and can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and anemia.
**Soil #
Transmitted Helminthiasis:** A group of neglected tropical diseases caused by parasitic worms that are transmitted through contaminated soil. They include ascariasis, hookworm infection, and trichuriasis.
**Strongyloidiasis #
** A neglected tropical disease caused by the parasitic worm *Strongyloides stercoralis*. It is transmitted through the skin, often through contaminated soil, and can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rashes.
**Trachoma #
** A neglected tropical disease caused by the bacterium *Chlamydia trachomatis*. It is characterized by inflammation of the eyelid and can lead to blindness if left untreated.
